Re: Chevy Beretta FF
Seems like a great time to play with the plugs and get them all facing the same way. Wish I could do that, and set the gap closer for those cylinders that are running leaner.

Re: Chevy Beretta FF
Today being my day off from work, it really wasn't a day off since I got the engine and tranny pulled out:

And all it took was just 3 beers and some gatorade:

I'll admit that the removal was a little messy, but I used my trusty absorbent powder to sweep up the mess and stored it in my Hazmat bucket.
Now I estimated what it would cost on a rebuild, but I went the extra mile to actually get a quote. Boy was I way off.

Got to keep it a numbers matching block lol!
Anyways I would like to do this rebuild and give me Beretta a new lease on life with a like-new engine.
A remanufactured long block would run me $1650 with core charge and not including shipping so it's about the same either way.
This little pet project has just been upgraded to a longer term restoration. It's mighty likely that I'll be headed to Bfest in a Jbody unless I decide to roll the dice on some salvage yard engine**cringe**

Re: Chevy Beretta FF
Your going to hate yourself if you don't take the time to do it "right". Well....you'll just have to do it all over that is. Woodchuck? Just asking for a headache? Not going to get a Zen moment from that. Focus your Chi. Mind and body must be one with the engine. Inner peace is a must(proper bearing install/fit,etc).

The Balance assembly is probably where the money is coming from on the rebuild slip... Most shops don't do a balance on a stock setup unless requested. I know mine was never done till I asked for it this year specifically.
Re: Chevy Beretta FF
i'd junkyard in a 30 day good unit until the original engine is complete or you decide to go with a re manufactured one.

Totally off topic -- Was that you at Bfest? I had my roadside breakdown mid-Friday and could have sworn I saw you walk up right as we were checking things out. Never saw ya again that weekend so maybe I'm wrong. I was totally panicked at that moment so perhaps my memory isn't the greatest.

Oh dear God, it's been awhile since I've been on here! I've had a lot of drastic life events come up that kind of pulled me away, change of careers, becoming an uncle, other personal stuff, that's life for you! So yeah, I was totally at Bfest...in spirit. My dad decided to tag along at the last minute and I never really get to see him so we kind of just spent Bfest going to casinos alot....like alot alot. It was cool seeing the Beretta caravan you had going on.
I also was there in a Sunfire. Go Team!

The Beretta is still here, which is always a good thing. It's....unique:

So I obviously took out the engine and it's in the garage awaiting a rebuild. Winter was coming and to make sure I didn't lose any pieces or screws, I threw in the spare engine I bought from a member on here years ago. I cleaned her up pretty good:

I have no idea how many miles are on this engine and never bothered to do a compression check but whatevs, living life on the cutting edge.

It sounds pretty good when I fired it up but it was burning oil, not good. Enough to foul the plugs where it became a no start. It's a temp engine, at least it moves.
Obviously its the rings or the valves that are leaking the goods and I really need to that that compression check.
So I did what any sane man does and I do the compr....I buy tons of parts on RockAuto!

Yay, a new cylinder head, bolts and gaskets!

I want to see if I can make this temp engine work out for the better, so I'm throwing in this new puppy and then doing a compression check to see what the real Mccoy is. Who knows, it just may solve all my problems.
Also, I was working on the 'retta and this happens:

Ugghhhhh, for once I'd like to work on my car without getting cut and bruised.

Re: Chevy Beretta FF
Well I had a little bit of a delay, this cylinder head decided to be different and require 2 threaded plugs to cover up some holes presumably left over from casting. So I had to order them. Probably overdid it on the thread sealer.

Also working on cars gives me an excuse to splurge on new tools ala new digital torque wrench accurate within 4%.

Heads on there and I downsized from the 1.6 roller rockers to the oem spec 1.5s this go around.

Re: Chevy Beretta FF
Man those exhaust ports look way to small vs the intake ports. I know they don't need to be that close for an engine as low powered as this one, but damn! Almost like the intake was made thinking that they would be used in Pony Stock racing. They left the porting work up to the builder(if it's legal to do port work on Pony Stockers). Hog them suckers out....nah just kidding.
By the way Koots now has a 3400 Alero. Just so you know.
