clunk in reverse
clunk in reverse
I've got a 93' 3.1. I just did the 94a poly treatment on my right upper mount and on the torque strut as well, very effective, a little more buzzing/vibes in the car, but no more shaking or clunking like before. The motor is motionless under the hood at all throttle ranges.
However, I still get a clunk when putting the car into reverse to leave my driveway. It only happens in reverse. The shift lever feels tight and when I get it into reverse there is a pretty loud "click/clunk" noise. I'm thinking the tranny mount (which hasn't been done) or misadjusted shift linkage.
Any ideas?

Probl'y the tranny mount. Shift linkage shouldn't cause that (on an auto).

yeah, i plan on doing the poly treatment on a new tranny mount soon, maybe then I'll finally have a stable drivetrain in this car, assuming the front seal/harmonic balacncer isn't leaking. There's a little seepage happening right on top of the torque strut (a new anchor mount covered in stiff 94a poly and sealed with gorilla tape) The old motor mounts were bad for a long time, so it may have loosened things up around the front seal also.

OK, the clunk, and bad vibration at highway speeds is I think mainly due to a bad tranny mount. I could see the tranny clunk and move back and forth quite a bit in the driveway yesterday when I looked under the hood and had someone keep putting it from drive to neutral and from neutral to reverse over and over again. It seemed pretty damn loose/worn to me. It seems like it may have gotten even worse since i put on the new poly reinforced motor mount and torque strut, since the motor/tranny has nowhere else to move now except at the weak link at the old tranny mount. I'm gonna install a new mount and give it the same pourable 94a poly treatment as i did the engine mounts. At that point the only weak point left in the drivetrain I haven't already done would be the cv halfshafts, which may have to go as well.
