2.8 to 3.1

Post by zigroid »

hello, I have a 1989 beretta GT 2.8L 5speed. the car has 173,500 miles on it and the engine is done. the car itself is still in pretty good shape. Ive decided to just swap a new engine in. ive heard about 3.1L swaps but can't find much information or the information I need (I suck at searching.)

my questions are:

1) will my 5 speed transmission bolt on and work?

2) will the 2.8L wiring harness work?

3) will the 2.8L ECU control it?

4) what 3.1L will I need and out of which car?

5) should I just put another 2.8L in?

ive also seen the 3.4L swap threads, would I be able to put one in my car and still use my 5 speed?

this isn't a drag racer or whatever. its my daily driver. I have plenty of mechanical experiance as I have tore out and reinstalled the trans in my firebird 4 times and the engine twice... about to do it a third.

thanks!

A 3.1L, not a 3100, is a direct swap and everything will just plug right in.  A 3400, not a 3.4L, will bolt up to the trany but you will lose your EGR and you will need to either buy or fab a new passenger side mount.  Theres much more involved in swaping in a 3400 that I didnt mention such as coolant hose routing, injector changes but many have done it and its usually worth it.  check out 3400swap.com

if you swap up to a 3.1 you could try buying a new 3.1 manual memcal  because there is one line of code in it that tells the computer about the larger displacment but it's not neccisary and i'm not sure if it would work with you're cars wiring.  they are usually only about 40-60 bucks and you can get from a dealer or some auto parts stores.
