Trany swap question

Post by kmb91396 »

Hey,

I am a member at corsicas.com and have been looking very seriously at modding up my 96 3100 corsica. Ive started asking alot of questions over there and it seem the answer always comes down to "ask the guys at beretta.net". My first (of many)question is about a transmission swap.  What manual can I hook up to my car that will last and is not extremely hard to find and will take some abuse. What is the average stock 1/4 mile time for a beretta with a 3100 manual set up?

I thank you guys for the help in advance. Any insight on on what I should do is much apreciated.

Hey Kellen, a 5-speed Muncie-Getrag transmission from a 2.8/3.1L V6 will fit your 3100.  Additionally, you could use the transmission from a '92 Beretta Quad 4 if you swap the bellhousing with a V6 bellhousing.  The V6 transmission has a 3.61 FDR, and the Q4 transmission has a 3.94 FDR.  As far as 1/4 mile times, I only recall one of 15.3 (not sure if that includes any additional mods).  Here's a list from Geoff Morrow on what changes are necessary to convert to a 5-speed:

QUOTEReplace transmission
Replace flywheel w/ 5spd flywheel
Install clutch disk and pressure plate
Replace shifter assembly (bolt in)
Replace mount system w/ 5spd mounts (weld in for 92-96)
Replace axles
Replace shift cables
Replace brake pedal
Drill holes for clutch pedal
Mount clutch pedal
Install clutch hydraulics
Wire in reverse switch
Wire p/n switch
Wire clutch safety switch
Replace driver side subframe w/ one from a 5spd car
Top off fluids

Drive.

There are only 4 things you need to change to get the car to run properly w/ the 5spd... extend VSS wiring, add clutch safety switch, rewire P/N switch, and wire in reverse lights.

Welcome

Since your car is a 96, you have OBDII. That means it will throw check engine light codes for a slipping trans/etc since it won't be there. You can get a DHP tuner though and edit and re-flash your ECM to get rid of the transmission stuff. This will also let you tune your car so if you ever go turbo or swap a different engine, you can fine tune it so you get maximum power out of it and it runs well.

The 282 5spd getrag is a stout transmission and the best one you can use. A good strong aftermarket clutch can hold lots of power. There are cavalier guys pushing over 350 horsepower to the wheels with them. (thats around 400 something flywheel HP). Only thing you gotta watch at that power is sticky tires and a drag strip and snapping axels. Otherwise it's just smoking tires.

- (below is some text from heavywoody IIRC that I added a few things)

For the park neutral switch, splice yellow and purple wire together, this will let the car start (or wire it to the clutch safety switch).  Make sure that the drive selector switch is turned physically to a drive gear to get the car to rev above 4000 rpms.

Under the dash there is a wire harness with about 9 wires, the fourth wire, light blue, location D.  Snip this wire so that the car does not always lock because it thinks its in drive and locking the doors. Which anyone might want to do to get rid of the pesky autolocks...

Reverse lights: The harness that I got off Corry's 1988 beretta had a 2 wire harness for the reverse lights that came off the manual transmission.  The colors should be blue and green.  The harness on my car that had the yellow and purple wire for the park/neutral switch will have a wire (possibly green) for the reverse lights.  Connect the greens and then connect the blue to anything hot.  C1B or C1D should be hot on that plug.  C1F should be the reverse lights.

First off I would like to  thank you guys, you are awsome. Second, this DHP tuner you speak of... does anyone have a link to a site I can purchase it from? Does anyone have or know of a walk through for a first time user looking to tune their car?

What levels of sucess are you guys having on here making the suspension tighter?

Thanks,

Kellen
