I have an 1988 Chevy Beretta GT 2.8 Auto.  I replaced the head gaskets in the car.  When I try to start it, it will crank but not fire.  I have fuel pressure, and the tach moves when cranking.  If I hold the pedel to the floor while cranking, I can hear a slight poofing sound.      What could case it to not start?  What else should I check?  Thanks.

Update: I took one of the pulg wires out and put in old plug in the end to check spark.  I was not getting spark.   The werid thing is, if the body of the plug is touching metal there is spark at the place its touching and at the end of the plug.  Bad ground?  After cranking awhile there is a strong smell of gas, I believe the injectors are spraying.  How does one make sure the injectors are working though?  Also, I checked the fuses they are all good.

The body of the plug has to be grounded (touching metal) in order for the plug to fire, so it sounds normal.  To make sure the injectors are working you need to remove the plenum (the part that says 2.8L) along with some other stuff that is in the way, then pull out the fuel rail with the injectors still connected.  Then apply 12V to the fuel pump prime connector behind the driver side strut tower (or have someone turn the key but DON'T start it).  With the injectors hovering just over the holes, make sure each one sprays.  This would also be a good time to check the resistance of each injector....typically 11.5 to 12 Ohms apiece.  After you put it all back together, hold the gas pedal down for a few to clear the flood.
