I'm not sure as of yet, but I may get one. I know a cooler is better, but I hope to get fastlane's headers and need the room up front for a fan or fans.

Too expensive! Better to just put an external cooler for the fluid.

In fact the guy who built my 3t40/3.73, LSD with the HD FD converter (doesn't get much better than that , HUH?) wouldn't warranty it WITHOUT a cooler.

And Buddy Tim's car was the same.

Get a good cooler.

Yea, the cooler is the best way to go. The only thing that eats at me is that my drive time to work is about 10min. I'm not sure if that's enough time for the trans to warm up with a cooler on it when it's cold out. How big does a fan need to be if it's on the front? Thanks to you both.
Hey asylum, do you ever have trouble getting the trans up to temp? I know it gets cold down here were Isaac and I are, but it gets real cold where you are.

I would use a nice aux cooler.

Doesn't stay too cold and does not ever get too got.

A trans can almost never be too cold. Heat is the BIGGEST killer of any auto.

My cooler is 12" X 12" and works just fine.

I just ran it from the top of the rad (output on my car) into the cooler in front of the radiator, and then back into the return hose.

Simple install, and worth every penny!!

Now if you want to get really serious, and I likely will over the winter, I would eliminate the radiator altogether.

I already eliminated the radiator for the trans cooler. Well I had to with the new radiator.

run that same cooler on my ta i also run the finned pan. keeps it at 160 all day long and when it did get hot at the track it was only 180 and at that time the 10 inch fan would kick on and cool it down.

Man, I like that cooler 1988GTU. Thanks again asylum (for all the info), it doesn't get that cold here so I won't block anything off. Well, the 90Gt didn't warm up all that quick(that engine had 214K on it though). So, fastlane you say both? I can work with that easy. I have to finish a old roll of film, it has a photo of how much junk the pan had in it(not sure how good of shape this trans is in). I need to get the adjustable vac modulator on to tell for sure. Hey 1988GTU, you got rid of the trans cooler? Would you use the finned pan now? Sorry guys, still thinking of fastlane's headers.

Yes I ditched the OEM trans/radiator cooler and just using the cooler above for the trans. IF I needed a pan due to a hole and had the extra cash/time to wait for it, MAYBE... To go out and buy it already having the aux. cooler (like above) ... nah, forget about it not really worth it. Spend the cash somewhere else needed.

Yeah the pan looks more durable than the thin one we have, but f-it save your money for other stuff.

The trans does need to be a certain temp. Here is an example, this last winter when it was very, very, very very cold out, I left my friends house and got on the highway. The torque converter did not lock up until the temp came up. It is designed that way. It took almost the whole 15min trip on the highway before it locked.

You could put a piece of cardboard over the cooler in the winter like some trucks do to reduce air flow to it.

Yes, there is alot of stuff I could use the money for. Is there a cooler kit for the 4T60E? That's a good example of my fear Isaac. I'm still thinking about the pan because the parts that people make for our cars are going away and never come back. I think that I can get a cooler anytime, but the pan I'm not sure of.

I don't know of any direct fit kit, but it is not hard at all to make a generic cooler to fit. If you can install a cold air intake, then this should be just as easy.
