no way! I have the crappy 2.8 MPFI and I get on average 34 MPG! thats city and highway! I do have the stick, but my friend has a 96 3100 W/ 3400 top end and gets 30 MPG.
3400: 185 HP 210 TQ Quad4: 180 HP 170 TQ
yes the V6 is heavier, but it is so much more reliable. right now I have 180,000 miles on mine and it's still going!
get a V6 car, 96 preferably, throw in 98 venture PCM and get the tuner for that PCM. mod the crap out of the engine, turbo, cam, 3500 parts, P&P it, balance everything, headers, the list goes on! All in all if you got the money you could be looking at 300-400HP.
FTW

(speedygtz @ Jul. 28 2008,15:02)QUOTEreally?   with how much modifications?

you really got to remember that the quad can take a beating if it is taken care of and not constantly trashed and beat arouond, the v6 does have the ultimate luxary of reliability, but i still think the sfi v6's are just junk, save the quad. its hard to find one as it is, and when you re-sell the car, think, is there anyone who is goin to want to buy a car that had all that modification done to it? probably not, but you say "new quad motor" and some other mods on the motor, and you easily see a sale, a lot easier then trying to sell a project.
Well considering the '96 3100 has 155hp/185 ftlbs torque I would say that a CAI, exhaust and less restrictive DP will net you the 180 stock HP the quad has with 25 more ftlb torque than the quad(which I'm sure would also go up significantly). AND you can run that combo on 87 octane all day reliabily. Torque is where it's at. And then there is the fact of having OBDII so if you were to tune the car as well I'm sure you could see more.

And I'll say it again, just because the Q4 is supposed to get better milage than the 2.8/3.1/3100, the fuel COSTS MORE. You should be running at least 91 octane with the Quad because of the 10:1 compression ratio. So any avings you think you have with getting 10mpg more can be thrown out the window when you factor in gas that costs on average 30+ cents more per gallon.

Gas prices as of Friday here:
$3.79/gal 87 octane
$4.01/gal 89 octane
$4.19/gal 91 octane

You do the math.
