3100 camshaft?
I'm thinking of building a new 3100(remanufactured GM as the base). I am looking for a roller cam so I don't have to get longer push rods and not any bigger than a 260(also less than .500 lift with 1.5 rockers). I'm a big fan of the roller cams, but can't find one(can go with a non roller with a range of say 2000 to 6000). Some other info that may help: I'll run the 2000+ ported heads and intake. Don't want the 3400 top end and heads because I don't like the idea of the combustion chambers being larger than the bore(it may mess up the quench). I was also thinking of getting the Milzy Motorsports stage1 kit for the 3100, it's about $1700(cam,ported heads, ported upper/lower intake and a tuned PCM). I don't know anything about Milzy and their work though. The big names(Crane, Comp, ect.) put a coating on their cams that make them last longer, so I'm not sure about other cams. I do know some about how and why cams work, to me it's all about lobe center. I know what's good for a SB Chevy, but not for the 3100.

Um, buy a 3400 from a JY. Dont mess with a 3100.
Next, Milzy or Ben at 60* (I think there the same cams, someone correct me if Im wrong) are the only places to get them period.
The rear manifold on the 3400 is much better than the stocker, use it.

As of now I think that I'll only have enough time to put in another 3100. There is just too much to do on this car. If I could just drop a 3400 in and that was it, I'd do it for sure. It's all that goes with the swap that kills the idea for me. Milzy and WOT-Tech are the only things that I found when I looked. Well, thanks for the info!
I guess I'll keep looking, the build could happen late next year, so there may be time for something to change.

here buy your cam from here ben will work with you and help you pick out a cam that will work best with your setup.

milzy has some good stuff but as his cams go they dont offer much advantage over stock.
mostly just a different sound, IIRC his stage 1 was a whopping 5hp over stock.
i have some parts from milzy on my car like his solid trans mount and something else i cant remember.
ben has a butt load of cams to choose from

Thanks, when I find some time I'll talk to Ben and ask for help. Is there a way to contact Milzy? His site kinda makes it hard to find out what all he has. Are the intake spacers you have the same as the ones on WOT-Tech? What do you think of them, did they help with HP and TQ?

What I would look into is the 3500 swap. For now if you need to replace the engine, just throw in what ever you can find for cheap. Then start putting $$$$ aside for a 3500 swap. It costs just as much as a 3400 swap, but you'll have an engine with all the updates, more possible future support, and they nearly cost the same as a replacement engine for your car.
Search the yards, 300 to 600 is the going rate for a low mile 3500 complete motor.
If you feel you need more power that the 3500 puts out, then contact 60degreev6 for a cam kit and bolt on mods. Get with 3400-modified, he might be willing to adjust a set of headers for you for a reasonable fee.
Lastly, don't forget about a tune. Without a tune, all the upgrades done will be out the window.

Clarification, Milzy and Ben (WOT-Tech) are not the same cams.  Ben gets factor replacement cores and has them ground to spec, Milzy makes his from a solid billet part... Milzys require a bronze oil pump drive which wears out quickly and also his options are not that big...
Ben on the other hand will give you any cam you want at ANY spec and measure and send you proper length pushrods, and his cams will work with stock oil pump drive gears without wearing them at all.  Also Ben's Stage 2 package out performed Milzy's pacakge by like 10hp and 15 torque or something like that.
Edit: I see Milzy has the factory style cams, but he still only offers stage 1 and stage 2 setups.

Uhm, a 3100 has a roller cam, you cant use the crane H260, etc you gotta go wiht a reground cam. A solid one from sealed power and have it re-ground. stock 3x00 camshaft is hollow with pressed on lobes not good idea for radical grind.
3400 heads are same as 2000+ 3100 heads, combustion chambers are non-issue.
The MMS 1 cam is a joke, makes like 5 hp more than stock. Go check out www.WOTTECH.com if you wanna get serious about a cam.
Don't buy a new 3100, just get a low-mileage motor 3400 or whatever. www.car-parts.com check it out. 3500 is more work than 3400 swap, not by a whole lot but there are things you gotta deal with and if you are pressed for time a 3400 swap will go quicker if you are limited with tools/knowledge/time.
BTW it will be a PITA to put a cam in a 3100 that's still in the car. and if it's old you'd want to replace the cam bearings, which would require pulling the motor to get it off the trans...

1988GTU: That doesn't sound too bad(3500). Yes, performance parts are hard to get for the 3100 now, later there may be nothing. So, I'll keep the 3500 in mind and push on with the 3100. I know, tune is the hard part of all of this.
3X00-Modified: That's great info and much needed. I will not put up with a bronze oil pump drive gear. Do you know if all that lift on the stage2 will be ok with the stock pistons(don't want bent valves)? I know that the ported heads are worked to clear that kinda lift. Both stages have the same duration and LSA, it's just the lift that's got me thinking that it may make some problems (extra cost for the tune also?).
Isaac:Yea, I know that it's a roller and hollow, but thanks. That's kinda why I want a better shaft(a better roller if I could get it, I know now that I can't). The 3400 chambers are a non issue? No back talking here, it's just I'm a freak for a good clean burn. I may need this new engine last for 100K and not burn out a head gasket(if this will not happen I'll get the 3400 heads). Putting the cam in with the engine in is crazy. That's why I want and need a new engine, 140K on this one(had 213K on the 90GT, not going to mess around with that again). I've pulled a few V8 RWD's, but never a FWD engine.

Well, Ben and I have been talking. It looks like I'll go with the stage1 cam,3400 stock heads and upper/lower intake. Does anybody know where I can get a reflash? I think that I'll need it after all this plus the CAI and fastlane02's headers.

What year is your car again? You should probably list the year atleast in your sig.

You will need to either swap to obd2 or to the pre93 obd1 to think about having it tuned.  Probably easier to swap to obd2, but imho obd1 is easier to tune.
Before you go and buy all the mods, be sure to have this issue sorted out first!

Honestly I have heard both OBD swaps work. Although its all about preference. Personally, I would go with OBD II and DHP Tuner.
really though, all of us here are trying to save you some time and money by telling you to do a 3400 swap. By the time you put 3400 heads on with a cam. You won't be happy and just get a 3400 later. From a 3100 V6 a 3400 swap is almost as easy as putting another 3100 in. IIRC there is only a few (like 3 tops) issues to be fixed and you're done. It has been said a mechanicly inclined person can 3400 swap a 3100 car in about a days time and have it running properly in a few days (tuning time)

First: thanks to everybody that has posted on this.
1988GTU: The tune is the key, if I can't come up with a way to do it the 3100 project will be dead.
Bandit: Yea, the 3400 is the best, but I have to be sure that the 3100 is a no go. Time is what's killing me on the swap and help also. It will be just me doing most of the work and that will make the swap take longer(with the 3100 I know where everything goes). We will see on the swap, nothing is set in stone as of now.
Thanks again to everybody for trying to save me time and money!
