I've got a bad dogbone mount.  And even replacements had play to them.  I got to thinking about what Chazzman told me yesterday about a solid mount there. ÂÂÂ But I still want a "little" give to the mount so I got to making my own dogbone mount out of factory mounts.

Ok, I got some pics to upload.

DISCLAIMER!!!  MAKE SURE IF YOU PLAN TO MAKE THIS MOUNT AS WELL THAT THE MOUNT HOLES MEASURE 4 7/8 INCHES CENTER TO CENTER!!!

I'll get more pics once it's all welded up.

So far this is the total cost of this mount

$20 - New Mount
$30 - Cost to have a reputable aluminum welder weld the peices together.   (A quote for a MOBILE welder, the guy came to me and picked up the peices and welded them for me.)

This gives you the basic idea that I am doing.  And YES I intend on grinding down the edges so they all are smooth.

Hrmmm all that when you could just buy a 96 style mount... which has less give.

I will tell you the honest truth here.  I bought a 96 style mount because I figured it would have less give.  It was anchor brand and I still need to return it.  The bolt would hit either side of the housing with under 100 pounds of force.  I havent tried a pioneer brand (usually much better) but GM mounts seem to be the only way to go.  I thought of the same idea bandit but ended up not doing it figuring I would just buy a $50 poly dogbone if I really needed it that stiff.

The reason I did this is because MRZ don't have any poly dogbone mounts listed on their site right now and I can't seem to get on FFP's site to order one from them.  


Plus I figure I would let everyone else in on my idea because of it being a simple and cheap alternative to a billet poly mount.

If this don't work I'll probably just go the solid mount route.

Thanks Jon.  I might go that route in the near future.

I got my mount back today.  The welds looked good until I noticed the guy that welded the mount never poped out the bushings when he welded it so he cooked them.  I put the mount in and of coarse they are spungy as hell.  Otherwise this mount turned out really nice.  If I can find some poly bushing to put in this mount I might even try that.  Who knows.  We shall see when we get further down the road.  I am going to put some miles on it today and see if I can break it.

So far the mount has held.  Other than I still need bushings to replace my melted ones...

Here's a pic of the final product installed.  (Don't mind the leaky ****.  I plan to 3500 swap this car so the 3.1 can leak all it wants.)
