Will a 96 lumina tranny fit a 1996 beretta

Post by MikesMNZ26 »

I have a 1996 chevy beretta with 3100 4 speed. Will a 1996 lumina 3100 4 speed tranny fit my beretta and work. Some people say no, but I would think it must work with maybe switching some electrical components arond. Anyone that knows these years of tranny's swapping, I would highly like any information. Thank you

Get the tag # from the back of the trans and I'll let you know if anything needs to be swapped... Most likely the only thing that would need to be changed is the side cover if it doesn't have the holes for the side mount.

example of the code, 6WFW

Wouldn't that mess with the ECM since the 1996 is OBDII and the lumina trans likely has a different FDR?

I'm asking for the code to determine the FDR and go from there.

I'm thinking it will be a 6AFW, which then yes is a 3.33 FDR trans, so you would have to have your ECM tweaked by a DHP owner to fix your shift points, and the ratio setting in the ECM.

You could also take apart the Beretta trans, and salvage the drive and drive gears and swap them into the Lumina trans. This would require removal of the channel plate but its not that hard, just don't separate the valve body, or pump from the channel plate and you'll be all good.

Isn't there also the issue of the 6 position quadrant versus the 7 position quadrant?

The only issue of that is possibly the gear range switch on the top of the trans and that's about it... Just use your original one. You can keep the selector that's in the trans that has the extra notch, because you'll never get that far with your shifter on the floor. I've seen this done before, it wont affect the motion of the hydraulic slide that's attached to it because when I compared the two, our transmissions physically just didn't have that extra notch and all the rest was the same. I think I have pics at home of this...

If you got a 7 position shifter to work inside the car and switched to a 97 PCM, and added a few wires I bet you could get a 7 position setup to work in a Beretta... I've seen these tables available in my Venture bin file, so the only thing preventing me from using them is my shifter and selector in the trans, and of course the supporting 7 position range switch with wires for that one extra circuit.

Can you use a 90GT's quadrant or one from any year that has a 3T40?
