New 2nd gear for 4T60e?
Ok, I'm mad. I have put up with the crap 2nd gear in this trans long enough. I had a 700r4 in my 83 Z-28 and it's the one that started all this. The 4T60e is more or less a 4L60e, which is a 700r4. The spread is to wide from first to second. I have read that the new 6sp auto is just as bad(no help there). In the old days I found a company that made a lower 2nd gear for the 700r4. I've looked and can't find them now. All I found is another company that will make the first gear higher. That would be ok for a V8, but not for a 3100 or 3400. I'm going to email them to see if they can make a lower 2nd gear for the 4T60e. I went to hotrodders.com and found out that there was a optional gear ratio for the 4L60e: 3.08,1.88.1.00,.79
All I want is that 1.88! It would go well with the 2.92 first gear in my trans. Anybody know how I can find it, or any other info(part#'s or someone that makes them)???
If I can get it, the gear will go into a built trans with a better FDR.

You can try Jeff at Engineered Performance in Atlanta. (Just Google it)
The guy is a guru on FWD autos but is, and can be a little hard to find, and his delivery promises can be hit and miss.
Having said that, I have three of his LSD's and the guy who builds my trans is super impressed with them.

Its not quite a gear when it comes to an auto... there are multiple parts that are sized differently that rely on a certain clutch pack to provide the motion, so um to change 2nd gear your looking at amost reworking the entire internals of the trans... sorry but live with it. I've worked with it by making 1st rev higher. I spin 6700 rpm before shifting and that seems to work, Not only does my cam make decent power there still, but it puts me at a better RPM rather than way low.

Re: New 2nd gear for 4T60e?
Thanks Eric, I'll try to find out if it can be done and what it would cost.
Well 3X00, I did think there may be more to this than just a change of gear. In shop class we took a TH350 apart. I was not for sure on what it would take though. As to living with it, that is also what the under drive crank pulley is for. I can do what you did(if the cost is too high) on the new engine that will have a cam. Thanks for the info. In other words, I have to at least try to find the gear so I can be happy.

Re: New 2nd gear for 4T60e?
Just to update this I have been looking for 4T60e's with better FDR's. This may hold me off until I get a built trans(don't know when the engine and trans build will start). I'm looking at the 5AFW and the 5PBW from the 1995 Grand Prix. The 5AFW should have a 3.33 and the 5PBW for the 3400 should have 3.43. The lowest price I can find is 1,670 bucks for a reman. Jasper wants 1,900 for theirs. This is somewhat off topic though.

Or you can go to a junk yard and buy the drive and driven gears from a 3.42 trans and put a 3.29 diff in it and get a 3.69 final drive like I did. 3.42's come with a 3.06 diff stock, so if you swap it out for a Beretta diff then you get a 3.69fdr.

That would be cool, but I think that may be too much for a DD. I did find this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-199 ... .m20.l1116
I sent them an email to see what brand of parts that are used and to see if they do any improvements.
I'll be lucky to have enough time to swap the trans. I don't think I'll have the time to do anything else, great info though.

Re: New 2nd gear for 4T60e?
I can get 25mpg on my pink car with the 3.69 ratio... 4th gear and TCC Lockup is your friend... Eric has his 3.73 with no TCC... I think thats stupid because the TCC function doesn't take away any performance aspect of the trans. Its one single solenoid.
I will also say again, your wasting your time with this... you'll never find someone who will want to invest the time and money thats needed to change the ratio of a gear in a 4t60e. Its the same exact trans gearing as the 4t65e used in GTP's and such and those performance guys haven't gotten anywhere with that so I really doubt you will since you dont even want it for a competition application.

I hear you, as of now this is a side project. The main project is to get the Grand Prix trans and its stock converter. At this point with 150K on this engine everthing is almost a waste of time and money.

150k? LOL my motor is close to 220,000 or above (I haven't figured it up in a while, did a cluster swap so I'd have to look up the difference) and I keep modifying it... haha
I drove a 96 GP with 3100 and whatever FDR and stall it had was NICE. It just MOVED off the line so nice. Faster off the line than my car but overall slower.
3.33 is probably what I'm going to shoot for with a W body stock converter. Or 3.29 pretty close.

Your the one that got me started on this Isaac. I hope to buy the trans soon. I'll call the guy today to see what parts he used and to make sure he built it the way I want. I thought you were working on the swap. What have you been doing?

Just bought the trans and the converter, total was $1,095 shipped. Not too bad, a overhaul would cost close to 1,300 bucks.

I know you can do it, I can't. So I have to pay the big bucks.
Also I must add that I have no idea where I going to put this thing before I put it in. That and the fact that I don't really have the money to spend. It is possible that I have lost my mind, or part of it.
