fuel system issues..please help!
Hi,
I bought a 1993 base 2.2L to work on as a project car. I bought the car knowing it had a problem turning on. It turns over for a few seconds then start to whine. I need to try and start it about 15 times before I can get it to turn on. At that point it will only turn on for about 1 minute before it turns off. I can take it out for a drive but when I stop I need to put it into N. I have to rev the engine before I put it into drive and at that point I need to floor it in order to get it to go. If I try to ease on the gas to get it to accelerate it will start to spudder and turn off. These are the things that I have done:
1. change spark plugs and wires.
2. change fuel filter
3. cleaned TB
4.new egr valve
5. checked vacuum
I am convinced now that it is a fuel system problem. My next step is to change the fuel pump/sending unit. My question is if that is a good place to spend my time and money or should I look toward injection? I can hear the fuel pump turning on.. The car has 143K. Any advice would be appreciated.

Rene, I would try the idle air control valve(get a new one). I could be wrong, but it sounds like the engine is not getting enough air at idle. You must change the oil very soon after you get it fixed. Everytime you try to start it and it doesn't start that fuel will leak into the oil(because it's not burned). Clean the IAC port with carb cleaner and a paper towel(with your finger and spray some Q-tips to clean the deep part of the port). If you put your foot on the gas does it start faster? If you pump is making noise it is working.

The only way I believe the car is turning on is if I pump the gas pedal. I know it is not the best thing to do, but it wont stay on by itself...it needs a little help. I will give the iac a try. I did take it off and clean it off with some carb cleaner when I cleaned the TB.
thanks for your help!

Before you start tearing the damn thing apart, get a fuel pressure reading.
I'm not all that familiar with the 2.2 but there is probably a schrader(sp) valve on the fuel rail to attach a gauge.
Pumping the accelerator does NOT put more fuel in, just puts more air in.
