fuel injector question
I have a base 93 2.2L. It is very hard to start. It won't stay on more than 5 minutes before it turns off. I noticed today that one of the injectors is wet around the surrounding plastic.
My questions are:
1. would this be my problem with the car starting?
2. do you normally replace FI's or try to clean and fix them?
3. Is is difficult to do? I have a repair manual, but it is very vague. If so, please drop me some pointers before I catch myself on fire!

Re: fuel injector question
Sounds like you have an injector O Ring leaking.
It's not too hard to get apart. Although I'm not too familiar with the 2.2 they should just pull out after you release the clip.
Unless of course it's physically broken, but that is unlikely.
However that may not be your main problem, but it is a good thing to get looked at as that is raw fuel in a hot place.
You can then check fuel pressure to eliminate the pump.
When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

Re: fuel injector question
I replaced the filter a few months ago. do you think I just need new o rings or should i look at buying a new injector. Is there a way to check if an injector is not working correctly?

Re: fuel injector question
I'm here with Asylum...
The O ring is the obvious leak but I'm not sure that's the main problem. Fix that first then do a fuel pressure check. If you don't have a gauge, any garage should do it for a couple bucks. See what that gets you.
You can also check the impedence of the injectors with a multi-meter. Should be about 2.9 however as long as they're all about the same they're fine. Anything noticeably different means a bad one.
Until you resolve all that, don't spend any more money on cleaning and such.
I'm sure there will be other suggestions but that's where he would start.
Good luck.

Re: fuel injector question
great to hear..thanks guys. I am thinking along the same lines. I do have a few questions:
1. I would imagine that I need to release the pressure, the haynes manual is telling me to loosen the fuel cap and release the pressure at the fuel pressure valve so that I can take the injector out (to check it). what can I expect to happend when I release the pressure? Is this true or can I go straight to work on the leaky injector?
2.. where in the hell is the fuel pressure valve on a 2.2L? I am trying to locate it, I would imagine it is near the injectors? Haynes is not very clear on this.
thanks,
Rene

Re: fuel injector question
There should be a pressure relief valve on the fuel rail, however I am at a bit of a disadvantage in that I am not very familiar with the 2.2
It looks like a tire valve.
Pushing that will relieve the pressure, however if the car hasn't run for a day or so there won't (or shouldn't) be any pressure anyway. Even if there is it's not a flood.
You should also be able to check the impedence of the other injectors without removing them, by just unplugging them to expose the connectors.
You will have to pull out the one that is leaking.

Re: fuel injector question
The ohms should be closer to 14. Under 10 usually means its defective.
