Transmission problems>>>No Reverse>>> '88 3spd

Post by 2.8GT »

I posted this on Bstuff but no replies so here it is again...

I recently did a transmission fluid/filter change along with a new torque converter solenoid. I noticed before I did the change that it wouldn't lock up in reverse. I was hoping that the new fluid/filter/solenoid would fix the problem but it is the same now as it was before. It won't back up the slightest incline, I have found myself stuck in parking spaces a few times... It is like the torque converter isn't engaging in reverse, or like its half way in neutral still. The weird thing is that only reverse is effected, all forward gears function normally and better than before the transmission work. This has me and my buddy's stumped, anybody here have any ideas? I really need to get this fixed, cant go all summer with it like this.

Its not belt's its bands. It could be one of three things, the band that applies when you go into reverse is burnt up and will not apply enough, OR the reverse apply piston seal is bad and its not applying enough pressure to the band, OR your pump is going out and you don't have enough trans pressure period.

I would start by finding a manual to determine how reverse is applied. I know how it works in a 4t60e, but you don't have a specific "reverse band" and reverse apply piston that I can see in any exploded views. All I can find is the intermediate band and intermediate apply piston and such, if that is the one that applies to get reverse, then that is accessible from below after removing the pan if you want to inspect that.

Also the TCC never applies when you go into reverse so I don't know what made you think that was the original issue. That only applies on the highway at cruise speeds.

here's a link to the exploded views I was using.

Well... Sounds like I have more work ahead of me... I don't think its gonna be fun. And I was just saying what work I had done to it... I had no idea what the problem could be, just hoping that the new fluid & filter would help... The TCC was put in to fix the problem of it sticking on in full lock after being driven for a while. I hadn't assumed it had anything to do with reverse.

I asked because of this statement. It sounds like you were expecting the solenoid to help with the TC locking in reverse.

That's all I was trying to figure out.

But yeah until you can figure out what engages the reverse function I can't help you much. I had a similar issue and it was because I installed the reverse piston slightly off center of the band, so when it was applying it was completely missing the band. I just had to remove the piston and re-center the band with a screwdriver and then re-install.

Somewhat simple for a 4t60e since the reverse band piston cover is directly on top of the trans and relatively easy to get to.

Well I found listings in the parts (650 something's) and corresponding diagram for reverse piston and all that but it shows all that to be internal with the other gears... I think if I end up having to pull the engine and tranny i will 5 speed it over fixing it... would like a little more info if there is anyone that knows these 3 speeds a little better?

hello guys i have the same problem with the transmission. I just recently had to pay $3200 for a new transmission on my car. I only have 44,000 miles on it. The automatic transmission filter was slipping and when I brought it to the servicing dealer, they said that the transmission suffered a complete meltdown. I talked to all of the people at the servicing dealer, even the top brass, the zone manager and the Customer Relations Dept. All of them told me the same thing. They said that I am responsible because I did not get the transmission fluid changed at 30,000 miles. what do you think guys? If you have had a similar situation like this, please let me know. Thanks a lot.
