What The Fu.....Alternator?

Post by kylez26 »

My alternator decided to quit on me the other day. So i thought thats fine, Went out and picked up an alternator off a 3100 lumina, Went home to put it on and to my surprise they were different? My alternator is squared off and the edges and has a square plug with 3 wires, The other one is more round on the edges and had a oval plug with 2 wires. So I Took a trip to the Scrap yard with all of the older cars, Searched about 150 3100 motors and Not the one had the alternator i need?
Does anyone know what cars have the alternator i need, or does anyone know how i could wire the 2 wire alternator on my car?

Any help is greatly appreciated Seeing how my car is stuck in the middle of my driveway.

Kyle.

An alternator isn't something you really want to replace with a used one, who knows how long it would work before doing the same thing.

Just buy a new one from somewhere, and depending on where they usually have a pretty good warranty.

Don't get a cheap one. Isaac did and it let loose. He ended up with a hole in his hood.

What year is your car? I'm assuming a 94-96? If so, then any 94-96, and some 97 & 98 3100 equipped cars will have what you need.

The more round alternators are the newer variety - mostly on 99 and newer cars.

And many yards offer excellent warrenties on their alternators - for a fraction of the price of a rebuilt one. Considering that most rebuilders out there are junk, I know I will be sticking to junk yard stuff.

The exception here would be a quality reman - like motor city. But again you get what you pay for.

I usually swap in a reman 80-90 buck alt and good to go for a while. I did pick up an Alt cooler from Styluss, but I have yet to put it in... lol
