I came about the closests to a 13 on a "stock" engine (14.06) but that was under almost idea conditions. I can't see it happening with a 3400 unless you gut the hell out of the car.

remember slush boxes are more reliable and consistent. To this day there is not one 3400 or 3500 5-speed time that's quicker than Brennan's, That either means all the 5-speed owners can't shift or just can't get it to go right. First gear is very hard to negotiate on those...

We're talking stock 5spds though...put them up against a stock auto 3t or 4t and see what happens. Stock 3500 3t40 did a 14.06... stock 3500 5-speed (Barry) has not matched/beaten that yet. And when you say stock 5-speed are you referring to the transmission itself is stock? If so the only difference between Eric's 3t40 and a stock one is the shift speed torque converter and clutches, so essentially that's like putting a spec stage 3 clutch in a Beretta and having someone who can shift fast.

All I know is that I wish I had left the 4tsleezy-e in my car rather than swapping to a 5 speed. I know if I had the tranny built to be able to handle the power, I would have been in the 11s LONG ago. In fact I seriously considered swapping back to auto this year.. I even saved the mount I cut off the frame rail.

Barry's 5spd ran what, a 14.1? And Eric's gearing in his 3t40 was not stock on his 14.0 either. I know what you are saying about consistency with an auto, but as far as reliability/durability of a stock trans, I don't know how you can beat a 5spd. Just having a 3400/4t60e and a 3400/5spd it seems quite a bit quicker with the manual...maybe it's the headers.
With a TH400 I'd have had the Camaro in the 12s 3 years ago, but I'd still never build one like that today. To each his own, it's doesn't need to be a "fight." haha

Perhaps the biggest issue is the stock shift logic, Jon drove that car once and didn't like it either. But I don't have the cash or the patience to learn how to build a stronger auto. So my ~170k stock 5spd is doing great.

I've still got the parts to go back to stock on the front of my car. It's tempting to try just to see where it would go with a good launch on 15" crosslaces all around. I know that as it is there is a 14.7 with the 17s and Baers, so I think a 14.5 or better wouldn't be crap.
The huge brakes aren't going anywhere though, and infact I want the matched set for the back. Looks like I may have to supercharge this bitch just to make it back into the 14s.

One major problem with a 5speed is having to shift yourself makes for more human error. But I learned to drive a 63 Ford Ranchero 3 on the tree before anything with old school clutch systems there is a whole different ball game. Really though with a hydrolic clutch only time someone that knows how to drive a 5 speed that they hit the clutch in a 1/4 is starting out off the line.

I think with a cutout in my exhaust I could of matched erics time no problem. I did 14.10 on street tires. He did it with a cutout and drag radials.
But who knows whats going on now, 14.5's all day at Bfest NE.
But only the slips will tell. I can argue all day about trannies online. Me and Jon have been at it for like 3 years now lol.
