How to shift Auto into 1st gear

Post by beretta »

Ok well. i got my new 96 Z. and the shifter would only pull down far as going into Drive could not shift right down into low. it just would not allow it to come back that far.

So the cig lighter and trunk release was not working so i popped the center console off to inspect it and the wires were off the lighter. and i notices on the slider part where the shifter goes back and forth on the cover, far at the back where it would go into low, is a plastic stopper. the stopper has a hole in it you just slide it forward and put the shifter back through. then you can shift into low.

I think its a safety thing that would be put like that from factory, not sure if everyones was like mine but probably if its never been taken off and played with before.

I will pop it off later on today and snap some pics of what im talking about lol.

And my lighter and trunk release works now.

No thats not a safety thing, thats the indicator slider that someone had apart and never slid back over the shifter as it should have been... Now you should see an orange color below the gear your in if the indicator is not completely faded.

Also its not quite first gear, its LOW which is a combination of 1st and 2nd, it will shift into second if you raise the RPM's high enough. Its not like the 3t40.

i think w bodies got a 4t60e shifter which had P-R-N-D-3-2-1 but beretta's didn't.

Correct, the gear selector in the car the selector in the trans, and the channel plate slider might have been different as well to divert the fluid flow.

It has OD/ D/ L.

I had rpm around 3500 and it didnt jump into 2nd.

I remember my friends daytona, put in in 1st and i would changed go into 2nd at very high rpm and i think it even changed into 3rd.

Maybe someone moved the slider part on this one for a reason so the person couldnt yank it down into low gear, kinda neat that you can move that piece around though, if you lend your car out you could move it so they cant put in low and be goosing on it lol.

Watch out for it slamming back into 1st from 2nd at like 9mph in L.

My truck is strange... If you put it in 2 it skips 1 completely. It has 1 2 3 OD, but 1=1, 2=2 only, 3=123, OD=1234.

It actually shifts at a lower rpm 1-2 in L (wot) than it does in D or OD(wot).

well all im saying is when i got the car i couldnt pull it into low, and when i pulled the cover off i seen that piece on the bottom and moved it and now it goes into low, i wasnt sure if that was some sort of thing they done as a saftey thing so you can pull it down that far by mistake or something.

beretta.

Your's was simply screwed up. There is NO safety thing in there. Just was put together incorrectly by some other idiot. L just puts you in position for either 1st or 2nd, DEPENDING on your speed/RPMs.

For example, if I downshift at around say 55 into "L", the transmission drops to second, RPM comes up. Car slows down. (unless you hit the gas obviously). Once my car drops below 25, it downshifts to 1st. I know this, as I use the downshift a lot during my driving. I often bump it down to just slow me down to a curve, or something, L if I really want to pull it down, but I never shift into it above 60.

Now I haven't tried going up and not shifting it manually (leaving it in L), but I chickened out when I hit up near 5000 in 1st and just didn't push my luck. My tranny never has shifted UP to 2nd running in L. Though it should. I just don't know what the flip point is, and didn't want to spit tranny parts all over the roadway, even though in normal gear I have taken the RPMs higher than this and not had issues, but I KNEW it would go to second, which makes a difference.

Anyways, just fix the mount/hole so its in the right place, then it will work properly as its supposed to. :D

I got my best track times holding D for the 1-2 shift, holding L to redline and shifting back to D for the 2-3. The trans will shift higher on the 1-2 in D than L.

yes i know what L does. lol. i was just saying that i couldnt pull the gear selector down into L because it was blocked, and i thought maybe this was something that was done for a safety thing of some sort.
