My trans makes the same noise at idle, infact every 282 I've been around has had that noise. We always called it input shaft rattle. It's normal. As Barry said, beat the piss out of it without worry.

I wondered why there is no pilot bushing or bearing. I wonder how mine will sound with the brand new input shaft bearing?

Yeah I always wondered why gm didnt use pilot bushings like they do with the rwd's. There is so support on the input shaft at the crank.

Last time I checked any rattle is not right... Just my opinion. All of these setups are 282 and 3400 combo's... and the 3400 was never coupled with a 5-speed so I wonder if the crank doesn't have the proper size hole in it for the input shaft, or simply it is lacking a pilot bushing for that application... Has anyone ever measured the input support in the crank vs the size of the input shaft tip? Could you make a bronze bushing to fit? If you could I bet it would shut it up a ton.

The trans shaft does not have enough meat on it to even get inside the crank. The f23 is even shorter.

Seriously the input shaft doesnt even reach the crank for support? That's just nuts.

Yeah its wack. I know for a fact the f23 is nowhere close. The getrag may be a tad deeper but I dont think we can get a bushing on it.

Is the 3x00 crank same as 3.4 fbody? The t5 uses a pilot im pretty sure.

The clutch alignment tool (that fits snugly in the crank) is just a hair bigger in diameter at the tip than the input shaft, and maybe 3/8" longer. I looked at doing a bushing, but don't think it's feasible. The 3x00 crank does have the correct hole in the crank though, because the MPFI alignment tool fits perfect.

It's not just that way on the 3x00s only.

Yeah I know that means its the same on the 2.8's and 3.1's and thats just nuts, no wonder any chatter is exaggerated when you do put in an aggressive clutch... there is no support for the main shaft.

Seems like a very miner drawback.Considering how long it will last.I've never had a problem in almost two hundred thousand miles. And now the new ones is stronger to handle more power. That i'll soon be adding. :Yahoo!:

Well there are two bearings for the input shaft...one deep in the case and one in the bellhousing (the one that was hard to find to replace). And the shaft only sticks out about 3" from the bearing in the bellhousing, so there really is not much leverage for flex on it...at least not nearly as much as a RWD input shaft that sticks out from the trans case 6-8". That's got to be why there is no bushing...although I still think one could be beneficial.

Does the shaft even come close to the center of the flywheel? I know my pilot bushing on my Subi is actually pressed into the flywheel rather than the crank.

Robert... Minor drawback; possibly... But to have your car sound like that at idle, that would just kill me. I wouldn't stand for it and I'd be digging for a solution or reason why that noise is there. Sorry but just any drivetrain noise should not be present... I can guarantee that did not ship from GM sounding like that, so it is a mileage age deal that may be a result of something that was left out.

As Woody said, I'll be very curious to hear his trans now since he did replace his input shaft bearing. And a bushing is always beneficial... especially in a high HP application because that clutch wants to hop around and move when your releasing it.

I've had 4 transmissions, as low as 68k original miles on them and they all made that noise. It's not very loud, but it's there.
