BerettaFest 2012 Cedar Rapids - Proposal, Itinerary and Info

Post by KFLO 93 GT »

Dustin Bainbridge, and myself would like to officially submit Cedar Rapids, Iowa
into the running.

Two long-time community members / multi-time BerettaFest attendees would like to
welcome Beretta Nation to the Heartland!

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - "The City of 5 Seasons" welcomes BerettaFest 2012 with open
arms and a central location that is sure to help nurture a large car count.
What makes Cedar Rapids the ideal choice for BerettaFest 2012 is Location,
Location, Location. Cedar Rapids resides in eastern Iowa, roughly 20 miles
north of Iowa City on Interstate 380, just take I80 until you see I380, then
head north.

With a population of 255,452 the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan area is the second
most populous region in Iowa; behind state capital Des Moines. Cedar Rapids is
the cultural and artistic hub for eastern section of Iowa, and often receives
awards as a Best Value To Live In City, and many awards for business. Counting
nearby Iowa City, only 20 miles to the south on I380, the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City
corridor has an estimated population of 423,353 and features a wide range of
attractions, reputable and reasonably priced hotels, nearby 1/4 mile drag
strips, shopping centers and State Parks. The area is fairly easy to navigate
overall, with major areas quite easy to find near prominent roads. Proper
timing and planning can ensure low traffic struggles and hassle free convoying.

Please consider this outline and itinerary and take a moment to read about the
hidden treasures that Cedar Rapids and Iowa have to offer, and the decision will
become clear. Cedar Rapids, Iowa would be a great location to host BerettaFest
2012.

Section 1: BerettaFest 2012 Itinerary
Section 2: What are we gonna do in Iowa? Cedar Rapids area attractions + Handy
and Informative Links

-------------------

Section 1: BerettaFest 2012 Itinerary

-----Wednesday----- "Early Arrival Day"

So you're hardcore and like to show up earlier than Thursday? Welcome to Early
Arrival Day, previously an "unofficial" day for the early arrival crowd, now
with a name.

*5 - 6pm departure: If you're here a day early, we're going to take advantage of
our small numbers and go for a group drive. We'll split into 2 - 3 small packs
of cars, each lead by local drivers and take a small tour of the city and visit
the areas where our following daily functions will take place. The idea of this
cruise is to get more drivers familiar with the area to help lead packs to
scheduled events later in the week. It will also make for a good photo opp or
two!

*9pm "ish": After arriving back at the hotel around dusk, another tradition is
in order - Taco Bar! After the good times and outright convenience of having
in-room kitchens, we've located and are in discussion with a hotel that has
similar appointments. Group rate is not finalized but initial discussion with
management has indicated that we'll be under $100 per night.

-----Thursday----- Check In, Free-Time, Baseball Game / Open Option

*Late Morning/Afternoon - Check In at Hotel, time adjustable as required.

*Post Check In - Down time, rest and relax after driving, get unloaded, etc.

*5:30pm - 2012 Schedule depending, depart for Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball
game. Home games usually start at 6:35pm.

*Post game - relax at hotel and have a good time.

-----Friday----- Open Option / Drag Racing Night

Open Options:

*See section 2 for many different open option activities and attractions in the
area.

*BerettaFest 2012 Disc Golf Tournament. There are several people in the
community who enjoy disc golf, and the Cedar Rapids area has 8 courses to offer
within 15 miles of the downtown area, and many more in the region -
http://www.pdga.com/course_directory/zi ... ter0=52402

*BerettaFest 2012 Solo/Small Group Photo Opportunity - Time needs to be set a
side for each person to get a chance for photo with the banner and their car.
There has also been discussion in the past on a Decade Club photo shoot,
Original Owner group shot, and a couple of others as well.

*Drag Racing - Test & Tune night. Depart around 5pm ~ time depending upon track
schedules.

We've got 3 pretty close options for drag racing in the Cedar Rapids area. I've
personally drag raced at each facility more than once, and can attest to the
quality and level of prep at all 3. Each track is 1/4 mile, less than 1000'
above sea-level and an NHRA facility, prepare to fly!

A: Cedar Falls Raceway "The House of Hook" - Cedar Falls, Iowa - 60 miles away,
1 hour drive (mapquest time) via mostly interstate, some city at the end. This
track lives up to its name, almost everybody I know has their best 60' time
here. This track is group-friendly and is most likely to work with us. Has
played home to Iowa Minifest in 2004, and v6z24 bash has also used this track in
the past. http://www.cedarfallsraceway.com/index.html

B: Tri-State Raceway - Earlville, Iowa - 50 miles away - 1 hour drive (mapquest)
Usually prepped awesome, staging lanes run downhill, no pushing needed, fast
track. Home to Iowa Minifest in 2002 and 2003. http://www.tristateraceway.com/

C: Cordova Dragway - Cordova, Illinois - 100 miles away, 1 hour 35 minutes
(mapquest) via interstate. The longest drive, but a good track as well. V6Z24
bash currently runs at this track for their Friday night drag racing.

Post Drag Racing - Arrive at hotel around 10 or 11pm - enjoy parking lot time
and good friends.

-----Saturday----- Picnic, BerettaFest 2012 Show & Shine, Awards

Iowan's like their parks, and we think that BerettaFest will have no problem
securing one of the many parks in the region. Research has yielded more than a
dozen pavilions at parks in Cedar Rapids that can be reserved and are plenty
large enough for our group. The larger of these pavilions should definitely
have parking lots big enough for the Show and Shine.

There are a couple of parks in particular that are in mind. Those details will
be discussed with the committee first, with the mindset of keeping the park
location secretive to Attendees only after last years' shenanigans.

*Post Picnic - Traditional Group Photo.

There are a few ideas in mind for the group shot. A couple of the parks have
some great views, so we'd have to see where it goes first. But with all of the
park and lake options in the area, something great will be put together.

-----Sunday----- Goodbyes and Farewells

Say goodbye and most will depart by noon, travel-readiness depending. ;-)

Section 2: What are we gonna do in Iowa? An overview of local free-time options.
Rather than listing a million links, we'll hit the highlights first. The links
section at the end is made up of links for visitors that discuss many of the
great dining, art, and entertainment options that Cedar Rapids has to offer.
When considering Iowa City less than half an hour away - the number rises again
considerably - but that can be saved for a later date.

Activities and Attractions

*Amana Colonies - http://amanacolonies.com/ - Historic life preserved in modern
day. A national historic site since 1965, the Amana Colonies features a wide
array of shops, cafes and eateries and displays.

*Cedar Rapids Museum of Art http://www.crma.org/

*Coral Ridge Mall http://www.coralridgemall.com/ - Iowa's Second Largest
Shopping Center, located less than 30 minutes south

*Cedar Rapids Kernels Minor League Baseball
http://cedarrapids.kernels.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t492 - (A League) Affiliate of
the Anaheim Angels. Minor League Baseball is fun and affordable. If the
Kernels have a home stand during BerettaFest 2012 we can definitely score some
awesome ticket deals. The Kernels have a fairly new stadium which opened in
2002, featuring a 6 story LED video scoreboard and seating for 5,300 - making it
one of nicest stadiums in A-level baseball.

*Hawkeye Downs Raceway - 1/2 mile asphalt oval race track, features Friday night
racing weekly and multiple special events.

*Lindale Mall - Cedar Rapids shopping center featuring more than 100 businesses.

*Meadowridge Golf Course http://www.meadowridgegolf.com 9-hole, 3-Par golf
course - possible BFest 2012 tourney?

Thank you all for reading and for considering this location for BerettaFest
2012. With a combined 9 fests between us, we understand that this is more than
a long weekend - this is vacation, the only vacation for many of us. This is
cross country travel, and time to enjoy the company of good friends, good cars,
and good times, our Beretta Family.

We hope to see you in Cedar Rapids next June!
