You said in the OP that you wanted an intake. This reply is confusing, or you yourself are confused as to what he's offering you.
The op has a 3.1 like mentioned in the first post not a 3400 so by intake he meant air intake i got that from the first post
Yes but it's a 3100 since its a 96, and could have roller rockers, so in the end if he had a lower and upper intake he could very easily upgrade to the 3400 top end and gain MUCH more power than just a CAI. SO MPB does offer a good option if he can verify what rockers are on the engine, or if it has the notches for the rollers and he could just swap them on.

And if he wants to do headers then he really needs to upgrade the small port intake setup to benefit from the improved exhaust flow, since we already know now that a 3400 top end on a 3100 engine with 3100 exhaust manifolds already adds power, so that would lead me to believe the exhaust is not the bottle neck.

Well thats 100% up to you, and if you feel comfortable doing the work. I just know that a 3400 top end wakes up a 3100 by a lot... Even GM realized that and they started making large port 3100's and scrapped the small port stuff that came on ours.

You would need both intakes, upper and lower, and you would have to tap the coolant output port on the 3400 lower to take your threaded output quick disconnect, Rather easy to do... and since your 96 you are OBDII so you can just get a 3400 EGR and tube and just bolt that right on and it will plug right in.

Only other change is you would need to swap the linkage rod from your TB to the one that comes on the 3400 stuff so your cables match up the same way as they did before.

Would it matter what style/year 3400 upper he used, because I know there are 2 different styles for the EGR mounting???

I think I may have a 3400 upper and lower in my garage, hell I might have a 3500 upper and lower too! lol

If you got anything else that fits in the performance and or suspension category, dont be shy to post
I think I have a stock Z26/GTZ style dual exhaust tip if you're interested? Also, Do you know what size sway bar you're running up front, because your car is/was a base, correct? I don't have any extra front sway bars currently but I could get you a Z26 one.

Yes it would, pre 2000 would bold directly to his EGR, But they have a restricted neck design, the 2000+ was a better flowing upper.

3500 stuff wont bolt to 3400 or 3100 heads you would need 3500 heads, but the combustion chamber is too large on a 3500 head to use in conjunction with a 3100 block, you need a 3400 block to do 3500 top end parts.

He could run a 3400 lower and 3500 uppper if he so desired, but then he needs a TB adapter and many more odd setups for vac lines and such, egr would be the same as the 2000+ 3400 setup. A straight 3400 Large port setup is probably the easiest upgrade, Or he can get a 2000 3100 top end from a Malibu, its the same lower as the 3400 and just the upper intake says 3100 SFI like what he actually has... The trick upper that I used to run...

yeah its only a 3100... wanna race?

I have only picked up a few uppers for myself and others, but I find the 3100 big port to have a better casting. They are not as rough on the inside of the runners as the 3400's that I have.

Negatory unless you got a newer LIM I believe. I didn't grab the LIM unfortunately, as it was going to on my old '99 3400, but I ended up using the 3400 UIM.
