96 3400 swap
96 3400 swap
i know there is many threads on this already but many are for 95-pre and most are using a 5 speed on this swap.
If i get a 2000+ 3400 what parts will i need to swap it into my 96 automatic.
Motor mounts ?
swap 3100 injectors into it ?
fuel lines or different connector ?
Rad hoses ?
i seen some talk about heater core lines also.
Power steering line ? i just put a brand new one on not long ago for the 3100.
I also already have a 3400 throttle body on my 3100 so i can just swap that over.
I can use as many parts from the 3100 as needed.
Just trying to figure out what all exactly i will need to do this so i can start collecting parts and be able to swap and be running the same day.
The engine i might be able to still get is from a 03 grand am thats if he still has it.

That's one of the easiest years to swap.
Use your current motor mounts. Just pull the fuel injectors (rail and all) out from the LIM as one piece and set to the side, reuse the whole thing. Radiator hoses are the same (you can swap your current timing cover to the 3400 engine and use all your existing hoses). Power steering stays the same.
EGR setup might be different, I can't remember if the setup changed in 03 or not.
You will have to tap the LIM for the coolant pipe that goes to the heater core; there are other options too for that retrofit.

You can leave the 3400 timing cover on and just grind one bolt boss for clearance with the serpentine system. You will see where when you go to swap the accessories.
A 2000 3400 UIM uses the same EGR I believe, but a 2001+ will need an adapter.

im trying to get ahold of my cousin who had the 03 engine. i could probably get a 3400 out of a 98 venture van given to me but it has like 400,000 km on it, the van is rotting apart and the trany is starting to act up so its getting scraped i think.

You want the newer style engine. Breathes better. Last revision of the engine too, I think.

That 400,000km 3400 is probably gargling coolant and oil through the intake gaskets too.
2003+ is the way to go on these engines. If you're lucky enough to get an 04 or an 05, even better.
