This Supercharger idea work...??? Thoughts...??
Hey all,
I've been thinking of a way to get a supercharger onto the 3.1L v^ in a 1990 Beretta I'm slowly rebuilding.
I do not need A/C and I'm wondering what your thoughts are about custom mounting a Supercharger/Modded Turbo Charger in place of the A/C pump.
There is plenty of room for the intake hoses as I've thought of ways to mount and route things.
The only thing I have not fully thought of yet is the belt routing and pulley size of the Supercharger.
As I would have to add one or two idler pulleys to allow for sufficient wrap around of the supercharger pulley to prevent slipping.
I'm only looking for about 5 PSI boost for now, I will look into custom engine parts later then boost it more later...
I have found some small belt driven side mount superchargers, but I would have to custom mount them to the old A/C location.
What do you think?
All ideas and criticism are welcome as I'm thinking of going through with this, I can tune its OBD1 ECM later, thats easy...lol
EDIT: I think they are called "Centrifugal-type supercharger"

Yes it will work, thats exactly how Mars did it to his old Cavalier over on 60degreev6. It's the easiest way to custom install a supercharger at least fitment wise.

Yah, I was thinking and realized I can fit one there, the only thing would be picking out a unit.
I have a friend who is a very good welder, I can probably ask him for help with a custom bracket, My only drawback is that the belt has to wrap around enough of the Centrifugal Superchargers pulley, otherwise it can slip, I'm thinking of adding an idler pulley for this, but I havent the slightest clue where to mount it...lol
I'm thinking somewhere on the valve-cover, but then it has to be strong enough and not rip out, and not stick into the timing chain & gears...
I could either make a hole and mount it on the cover, or find an existing bolt and try to figure out how to stick it on that...idk...
^ An idler pulley that is.
Unless you think I don't need one?

Integrate an idler into your bracket, IIRC once again thats how Mars did it but I'm not positive I never saw his belt routing.

right now I am working on a vortech v5f superchager that wil be run by a shaft from the other side of the engine. I'm looking for 6 Psi later for 10-15. I hop to hit at least 350HP on a 3500.

350hp on a 3500 is actually very easy when you pull boost into the mix. You probably won't have to touch 10psi to do it either.

Thanks for all the info! It really helps and gives me good ideas.
I will be planning out as time goes by, I wont be able to start building right away though...
And side note: my project of running my Beretta on water has been going great, I have worked out on paper to replicate the RC VIC circuit from Stanly Meyers patents and other documentary, I will slowly be collecting parts for it, although his was refined, I do not know how well mine will work.
Maybe I can go to berettafest one of these years...idk yet...lol

This should help some more...
This is what Mars had

obviously I don't know how it was postitioned exactly but it shows you the idler on the bracket like I suggested.

Thanks for the photo, it helps visualize it.
I can even see a brand name I think, that will help a lot, as I can look up its specs and see what was, maybe get some ideas for mine, idk..lol

There is nothing hidden about it... He listed that kit for sale on 60degreev6.com last year.

What you get :
Rotrex C30-94 blower
Braket to hold the SC to any 3100/3400. Will not fit a 3500 without mods.
Intercooler
(6) 42# Ford racing injectors
Tuned chip (ran 11.92 on 91 octane)
2 bar map
Greddy Type S BOV
Can include random 2" and 2.5" silicone couplers even have the 3"to 2.5" for the TB.
What you will need to get it going :
Charge piping (damaged in crash)
Oil lines for the SC (damaged in crash)
a small oil cooler for the SC (damaged in crash)
oil reservoir for the SC (damaged in crash) - can use an oil catch tank or alum. radiator overflow tank.
With my chip the setup runs well, not perfect, but I wasn't afraid to drive it 300 miles to the track. Setup for a 55 psi FPR.
I had a 3400 with STOCK headbolts, and rotating assy. All it had done basically were LS6 springs and a 210/214 .506 .506 on a 110 cam 3500 upper 70mm TB, headers, a good exhaust and it ran very well !! Engine was ULTRA reliable, I don't know how many HUNDREDS of passes were on this setup, but it just plain works.
Asking 1700$ I will throw in the cam, springs, custom pushrods for an extra 200$ if you buy the complete kit.

I'm thinking this is the route my build will go eventually. I've done a lot of research on centrifugal units over the last year or so.
In my opinion, the simplicity of the Powerdyne units make them ideal for any application looking to push under 8psi.
But don't go buying one out from under me now!

lol ok
I've been looking into them recently, and I don't think I'm buying one anytime soon.
I'm for sure buying a brand new one, and making my own bracket setup.
idk, I get uneasy about buying certain things used. lol
What are your plans for mounting it on the engine?
I'm thinking of in place of my A/C pump, but then I keep having second thoughts about that.
I might mount it somewhere else, and if it sticks out to far anywhere, I can always do something like a hood scoop to allow for the lack of space that way.

the rotrex c30-94 is a very powerful and efficient blower, but it is very expensive as well. that's why I went with a vortech. I went with centrifugal because I already have a hard time hooking up from a dead stop I didn't needed more power down low.

Wow thank you.NastyEllEssWon wrote:if i can get to my old pc sometime today ill post up pictures of norms old supercharged beretta thats setup like this
pictures are always good, I have been having a hard time visualizing this.
The cost of the supercharger will be the biggest thing to overcome in my opinion.
I have some friends who can help me fabricate things, so building it will be easy, just time consuming as we all have our own things to do as well...lol
