03-05 3400 is the best one to find, latest 3400 revision with all the new items on it.

The most that you will have to do is grind off a boss on the timing cover to clear the passenger side motor mount, re-use your 3100 exhaust manifolds or swap to the 3400 ones and have down pipepe made, Install the rear cylinder head temp sensor into the block drain plug on the back of the engine, or drill and tap the cylinder head to accept it as the 3100 has, (drilling and tapping not recommended if the head isn't coming off since you will get crap into the coolant jacket obviously)Another solution to that is to take that one wire head sensor and wire it to a three pin sensor at the thermostat like a 96 beretta has A little more involved than just re-locating that sensor to the block drain. Find a set of 99 3400 injectors, OR you can get away with the stock 3100 ones since your not looking for performance, and then the only other thing I can think of is getting an EGR adapter from 60degree for the 2000+ motors. TCE sells them and they will allow you to bolt your three solenoid digital EGR to the 3400 which comes with a 1 solenoid OBDII one. (http://wot-tech.com/shop/gm-60v6/90-95- ... od_75.html)

Oh and one last thing is if you want to keep the oil level sensor in the oil pan you need to swap with the pan from your 3100... and if your doing that you can also swap timing covers from the 3100 because then you know the motor mount will fit that boss change thats on the 3400.

I believe that this will cost less since most of these engines you can get for 300-600 with low mileage and you'll spend at least that much repairing your 3100 which then still has much higher mileage.

I have this junkyard near by they charge $200 flat for an engine and they currently have an 04 impala base which if i remember correctly is the 3400 engine. I will have to stop by and check it out.

So what do i need to do with the ECU? Or can i just leave it alone? The way you said what i had to do it sounds more like literally just a swap, pull the old one out, make a few mods, swap the new one in.

Nothing to change with the ECU, its OBDI.5 so it would be a nighmare to do anything to it anyways, but yes it is very much a direct swap hence why it's highly recommended.

Best practice is to swap over the sensors from the 3100 if you know they are good. The 3400 uses all the same ones but pigtail length may be different, and the cam one for sure needs to be swapped out. I also left out you will be re-using your factory fuel lines, and fuel rail and also the fuel injector harness.

When you pull the 3100 and have it side by side to the 3400 you will start to see what you need to swap over in order to get it to work, its very straight forward.

Any engine around here goes for 1k if it has 30k on it. It would be 700 bucks for one with 70k. This state sucks. Yeah that's everywhere in the state by the way. They don't sell many I can tell you that. But that is why most older cars are junked here.

I live in Glendale (I25&Colorado blvd), I usually use one of the Upullandpay yards, the Denver or Aurora. Tomorrow i am going to the Denver UP&P to get a switch for a saturn and am going to check out the engine for the impala. You know any of the other yards that have reasonably priced engines? We should get together some time. p.m. me
