What about the lower intake gaskets? I don't know how many times people have said head gaskets and it was just the intakes. Not people here, just others I've met.

Thats more typical with 3100 engines over the 3.1's but anything is possible.

A thing to remember is you will get more coolant in the oil contamination when you have a intake leak over a HG leak because unless the head gasket is REALLY bad you will be burning off the coolant.... where as the intake leak is going directly into the oil.

They probably suggest HG replacement because they know they will replace the intake gaskets at the same time so even if they were wrong and the HG's were ok they still ended up fixing the issue.

3X00 is right! I bet they say head gasket because of that.
You can do some checking of your own. Look under the oil fill cap for milk, check the dip stick for the same and look at the sides of the heads for leaks.
Lower intake gaskets leak on the top of the heads. So if you see coolant leaking there even in a small amount then there is your problem.

they probably take the coolant cap off and watch air bubbles from the exhaust as its running.

that's a good tip, and pretty common sense i suppose when it comes down to it...

you have to use a compression gauge in place of the spark plug per each cylinder to find out if it is head or intake gasket thought right? for internal leaks, external, pretty obvious just by looking... (cleaning the outside engine of build up grease and looking)
4th one's a charm, 5th one is, beginnning to sound like this is an addiction...
