96 Z-26 Trans Interchange Q

Post by wpd »

I have a 1996 Z-26 w/3100 V6. The trans feels like it is started to slip when going up large hills. I changed the fluid and that did not help. So, I have started doing some research as to what vehicles I can get another trans from. After searching this site and 60DegreeV6.com am I correct that the trans from a newer 3400 will not work? It seems like my 96 has a 4T60-E and the newer cars have something different. I want to say a 4T40-E or 4T45-E.

I ask this because I was looking for an engine and trans package from a newer Malibu, Grand Am, etc. Since I figured it would be cheaper and easier to get the engine and trans as a package from an auto recycler since I want to do the 3400 swap in the near future anyway.

So, do I in fact need the engine (3400) from a newer car and a trans from an older (3100) car? Or am I missing something? Is there in fact a car or van that I can get the motor and trans out of.

Thanks.

You are right the newer cars have a smaller weaker 4t45-e to fit inside the smaller cars better.

Perhaps a van would have a 3400 and 4t60e. But the gearing would be different so you're speedometer would be off, and possibly your shift points.

Before you throw out your transmision, go to a dealer ship and ask for "GM automatic transmision seal conditioner" It's a bottle and only costs $6. Pour that in and see what happens after 700-1000 miles. If the slipping goes away, you just saved a bunch of money.

Mine would slip only when really cold in the mornings. It wouldn't engange cold. I had to warm up the engine before I could get moving. Now it starts and goes right into gear and doesn't slip.

BTW how many miles on your transmision? Mine is a 94 with 180,000.

I will have to give that conditioner a try.  I have a 1996 w/ 165,000 miles. It only seems to slip when you are going up a large hill at highway speed.
