replacing 3.1 with 3100

Post by tcmaster1 »

I have a 93 gtz with a 3.1 auto. motor is bad. I just acquired a wrecked 95 base(80,000 miles) with 3100 auto with overdrive. What will it take to to put the 3100 with the overdrive into the gtz? Thanks in advance for the help.

The 3100 is a pretty easy swap to perform, you can pretty much drop it right into place of the 93 3.1 using all of the 95's accessories, just a few wiring changes to re-locate the coils and such. But to put the 4t60e in it as well your looking at doing a wiring upgrade to get to OBDI.5 the 94-95 ecu, OR use a 96 OBDII wiring setup. The transmission is electronically controlled unlike the 3-speed 3t40 you have now.

Is there an overdrive transmission that is a simple swap into the GTZ? If so, How do I identify the transmission? I also have a low miles 2.8 with a transmission out of an 89 cutlass. I never saw the car they came out of so I don't know what it is?

There are non-electronic controlled 4-speed transmissions that you can swap in but IIRC the mount for the trans is different. Also, its tough to find a "low mile" 4t60 non-e transmission. Whenever you are in the yards, look for early 90's Lumina's and look for the RPO code GX3 on the spare tire cover (if its still there).

thanks for the help. I have done plenty of motor swaps before but never in any front wheel drives. This will be my daughters car so I want it reliable. I just want to know what I'm getting into before I start on it. If any one wants to help with a little more detailed info I would really appreciate it. I would really like to make this an overdrive car. But it is not necessity, just a want.

A properly working 3speed with a good TCC lockup should be perfectly fine. I think you'll go through more of a headache trying to find/install the non E version of the 4t60 than just rebuilding or have the 3t40 rebuilt and ensure that the TCC solenoid is a good brand.
