Front cover Problem

Front cover Problem
Well I have a problem here. I am in the process of painting my engine/tranny and I was tryin to move my shift linkage around and well I found it was stuck. I did a LSD Green install on it. and to tell you the truth i don't remember when I did it. As far as I know it did shift.
Anyways. I could not get the shifter into N. I messed with it for a few hours. Oh I should say its a Getrag/Muncie Hm282.
This is ebay info from when I bought it:

Here comes the pictures: This the cover from the tranny I bought. Well its not for a V6 like I wanted. Its also will have to have an External Slave cylinder.
This is a cover I bought from a beretta guy. This is for is for a V6 but it needs an external slave Cylinder. That is what I have.
Now the only problem I am having is its stuck in reverse. So I pulled it back apart. And I F'ed with it for an hour or so and may have found my problem.
Im going to start from that start here. View Pic below:

1, 2, and 4 should be even and 3 should should be a little lower when the tranny is in N.
Now when I put the top case on 4 goes down. That would be reverse. I could not fig out why this is happening. After a million tries I think I know why.

Now look at the rod that is on the left. That is part of 4. When 4 goes down that does to. That rod is part of the reverse gear.

That is a dimple from the V6 case. The dimple is small because of the cross shaft for the TO Bearing.
Now look at the inside of the case:


This is the dimple from the non V6 case. The Dimple is big because there is no TO Bearing cross shaft forks. This is the inside of it.

One a scale on 1 to 10 how much have I confused you. Its not you its def me. Im not sure how to explain this.
Now I think that left rod is to long and it hitting the case when I put it down and it locks it into gear. Am I right. I really need help on this.

I see what you're talking about, but I dont know why it should be a problem. I had a Quad getrag from a 90GTZ with a v6 bellhousing and everything fit fine. Is the shift linkage on the transmission that you can manually change gears by hand? Make sure it is in neutral when you are assembling.
This was a while ago, so I may not be remembering exact details, but I had issues on mine where I had to mess with the detent rods while shifting gears to get everything to line up correctly. If you assemble it with a detent rod not in the correct place it wont shift, it will bind. I dont know why you can move the detent rods independent from the shift mechanism, but you can, and it all needs to be sorted out before assembly.

When I start to put the cover on it in is N. I can move the shift link around. I start to put the case on and it does not go all the way down on its own. So i wiggle it and it goes down and its stuck in reverse and binds up. So what I did was i shifted it in reverse with the linkage and that made the left rod go down. I put the case on. It fell on. So then I try to put it in reverse and it moves but i can hear that left rod hitting the case and again stuck in reverse. Im just thinkin if the tranny is made for an internal slave then I have to get a V6 case that is Internal. Now if the tranny was made for an external it would not matter. On your GTZ was it internal or external slave?

Well obviously cutting it is not the right answer, you need to figure out the true issue... If others have done this and its not causing problems, then you cutting the detent rod will not fix it either.

Cutting it was a joke. I was wondering if there is a way to adjust that rod down. I have looked in the manuals and found nothing really. Im stumped. Now long shot but maybe when they rebuilt this tranny they put in a longer rod? Im just shooting in the dark. Im going to take another look through the manuals.

Well I did some more looking around. Did some searching. And I guess you do have to cut the rod down.

I told him that I have a 282. Org. the tranny came with a case for a 4 cyc and it was an internal slave. And the case i want to use is a V6 external. And everytime I put the case on it gets locked into reverse. As soon as I said that he said well you got to cut the reverse rod down a little because the tranny is made for a internal and has a bigger indent for the rod. And the external has the cross shaft in the way so the dent is smaller. i asked him about much to cut off he said about 3/4 of an inch.
What do you think about that. I am trying to just buy a new case from the dealer. Well Price it out.

Im glad I wasnt going nuts telling you to cut it on bstuff.
It would be cool if you take a measurement for us so theres no guess work next time someone wants to swap to quad gearing.

My dad looked at it and said "crap Scott you might have to cut it. Ha ha." Im am thinkin that his is right. I still cant find anything that would cause this but that rod. Im not to thrilled on cutting it.

Can you get a rod from the trans that fits the external slave? Thats why I question cutting it... there should be a part out there that will fit, rather than hacking it up.

Mod if you can find one for me I will swap. I have looked and all I can find is overhaul kits. And they dont make the front covers anymore so a new one is out of the picture. I am seeing more work if I dont cut it. I need to talk to my dad and my bro inlaw and get some better ideas on how I am going to do this.

I'm not referring to new... Where did you get the cover from? and do you have any local junkyards? if you did I would just think that would save you the worry of cutting a part in the trans where your best measurement is "about 3/4 of an inch" I wouldn't trust an estimate cut like that...
I would love to help but I dont have a local u-pull it yard that I can get to in under 1 1/2 hrs, plus I'm busy packing stuff up to move in september, i'm lucky my car is ready to run at NE fest... and I'm still not sure if my NOS bottle is even full enough, and I have no time to fill it before I leave... lol, I have just enough time to work and sleep...

Well I bought the case from a Beretta guy from one of the sites. Forgot the person. We do have a local JY but like you Im busy for the most part of the day when its open. I do most car work from 10:30pm till i need to sleep. I know I could cut this right. I would take my own measurement, the only reason why I asked the 3/4 is because I had already measured the rod and the dents and knew how much I should take off. To justify why I thought it was the rod. I wanted to see if the guy was blowing smoke. I will ask my dad and my bro in law to take a look at the JY.
