OBD1.5 to OBD1 Project & How to Guide.

Post by IsaacHayes »

Image

It has started...

The info is out there but I'm making a nifty guide along with a how to for tuning with OBD1, what default values you need etc. 8)

I'm not saying OBD1 or OBD2 is better than the other, but OBD1 is cheaper to get the hardware to tune, and there are lot of tunes out there that people are willing to share. With my guide you will be able to un-hook your stock PCM, and plug in a new one. Drop in a chip with some values modified by you, and fire up the car and drive. And tune of course. :) No swapping harnesses, EGR valves, ABS stuff, etc. Hardest part is mounting the new PCM to the stock location, but some sheet metal or metal straps from a box modified will probably work to attach it to the stock location.

Thread will be updated with pics as I go. The info will be posted possibly but the full version will be in the guide when I'm done putting it all in my car. Consider this just a teaser for now. :)

... and yes, it will shift your 4T60-e. (you can even add a switch to run a 2nd trans table for performance shifting)

No one had done it successfully until 5/21/09. Robert Saar on 60* has his Monte Carlo running on it. Bzopi tried it once back in 2003 but had issues with the MAP acting funny, possibly the 5v reference to the TPS/MAP. Since you don't have an auto anymore, you could run any of the OBD1 PCM's no problem too like Rodney did with his car. The 16149396 is just unique that it can control a 4T60E. But it can also take any bin the 7730 and 7727 PCM's can such as TGP $8F code which makes it cool because you don't have to change ECM's if later you swap in a 5spd and/or turbo... Also v6z24 guys (Mars for one) are starting to get code 59 to actually fire and work with the 60degree. Which should work as well.

OK, I haven't made any updates to the guide in a while. It finally stopped raining here and then I got swamped at work and they got short staffed and couldn't take off any on the nice days this week, and now I'm sick. Wonderful. Hopefully the weather will hold out this weekend and I can get a chance to work on this some more.

I figure I might as well post up an incomplete version, as a teaser. THIS IS NOT FINAL. Some of the info is NOT FINAL. Some of the info might not be needed, and some might be in-accurate, in-complete, etc.

However there is some good info in there and if you know how to tune or can read up on your own the wiring diagram is there with all the info to get started without the document being finished. I'm writing it as I go with my car so I can just add in the stuff as I come to it. Right now I'm waiting on figuring out if I can mount the PCM in the stock location. If so I will put in how I did it, and how long to make the wiring harness adapter. Then I will complete all the tuning how-to so if you've never read up on the stuff, you can pick this up, and start tuning your car without reading all the other tutorials. Sort of an all-in-one for L body. As you can see there are some stock values listed that you'll need to change. More to come....

No comments? Even if no one else follows this at least I'll have all my stuff documented in it so if I forget after a while I'll have a quick reference. %)

I like how the tuning tools are cheap and available. And TunerPro v5 beta is really nice. You can make all kinds of stuff for your logs if you wish. The DOHC code has tons of things to change in it. You can even remove the torque management if you wanted to, which I'm sure is there in OBD1.5. It has a cat converter protection too stock... so you don't over heat the cats...

That explains why you always say tuning for OBDI is cheaper... Hell you can get DHP stuff for cheap if you look around some. ;)

Even brand new, emulator is 175 bucks. A burner is only 85. The adapter is like 35, or you can solder a $10 ZIF onto the stock memcal... So it's still cheaper than a used DHP.

But yes I did get a great deal (1/2 off) on the equipment which I was going to buy anyway.

This reminds me of the 5-speed auto debate... no matter what I say the latter is always better.
