89 GT 2.8 Tranny Shifts Funny

Post by metalheadchic3 »

Last month i blew the head gasket   and just dropped a used (23K mile) engine in it.  Just got the car back today and now it shifts funny - i barely hit the gas and its downshifting and totally winding out.  I have to let up on the gas to get it to shift into 3rd, then as soon as i want to barely accelerate again, it downshifts again.  Before i replaced the engine, i had the TCC solenoid unplugged and i know there are a couple sensors that needed replacing, but it shifted normal, not like this.  Any suggestions?

Sounds like your TV cable is out of adjustment. The adjuster should be by the throttle body.

ok, i found the cable and the reset tab but theres nothing here that slides. this doesnt look like the diagram you posted or the one in the haynes manual.  also, when i pull on the throttle cable and let go, sounds like theres something loose down there.

Best guess is to follow the cable down to the trans and make sure that the part that goes into the trans isnt broken. Unhitch the TV cable from the throttle lever and see if there is any resistance. If it feels like the cable is not attached to anything you may have to undo the bolt holding that cable housing in place and lift it up to see whats going on.
