My new favorite engine the "shortstar" 3.5L DOHC V6

Post by 1990BerettaGTZ2.3L »

Well I've been doin some reading on this motor and I like it so far, I originally liked the old 60° v6 that from what I hear from the posts I've had is a junk motor for from maintanance issues, especially the timing belts, so I been doin some looking and remembered the 1999-2002 northstar based oldsmobile dohc v6 that was actually a dohc based motor built from scratch rather than the 3.4 dohc "tried to improve" 60° v6", from what I hear this motor is a hell of a motor and best of all they put them in the intrigue and aurora, since they put them in the smaller intrigue, I suppose this motor wouldn't be a swap to do in our berettas, gimme your thoughts and opinions cause this would be a kick a$$ motor swap that sounds easy

not necessarily, look at the v6 to quad or quad to v6 swap, not all that complicated, look how long it took for the 3400 swap, and that's pretty much plug and play, the 3500 swap isn't easy, but if you have a general knowledge about cars ect, its not too bad, just because it sounds hard, don't mean it is.

i say if ya wanna give it a shot, check out the motor mount locations ect, and do it.

yea speedy knows what he is posting. he was referring to the OHV 3500

just weld metal parts of the motor to the frame and you're set. i think the water pump pulley is metal. weld that too.

OOps I guess I didn't use my brain on that one a 4 cyl would be sohc I mean OHV duh cause why would a v6 have a single cam over the head, but yea I'm talkin about the DOHC 3.5L, only thing about em is there's no tuners for them not from hptuners or the other one can't remember it

You seem to be so confused that for now you might just want to stick to putting gas in your car and maybe changing the oil yourself... %)

hp tuners will work. its not based on the motor, only the ecu. big part that will be difficult is wiring it in to work. basically you'd be stuck because now you have to swap the harness, and figure out a way to run your interior harness because you wont be able to use the shortstars ecu to run your gauges and stuff. it can be done but for the power it sits at, an ohv motor would by far be the way to go.

on the same note, there isnt aftermarket for that motor.. and the ohv motors have huge capabilities, with all of the aftermarket parts available.

I know what I'm talking about, u need to see my 68 chevelle I restored, originally was a 6 cyl, when I bought it she had seen many years of wear and tear, it was primer black and rotted out when I got it, had a turbo 350 tranny and that was it, after 2 years of sittin in my driveway, finally got a 68 date coded 327 325h.p (L-79) motor I had outback under a tarp and dropped her in and found a 68 date coded 2-speed powerglide to put back in it like original, well after sittin another 2 years waitin to go into a body shop the tranny went, so that was my first stroke of bad luck with an automatic, I finally went out and got a 4 speed and put in it, couple months later I talked to my dads friend that had the rear end out of his 70 chevelle ss454 which was a 68 date coded axle housing that's a 12 bolt 4.10 posi, dropped out my original 10 bolt 3.08 non posi, and stuffed the 12 bolt under her, eventually got a set of Lakewood ladder bars for it to eliminate wheel hop, luckily it had factory air shocks under it so that was a plus, a year went on finally got in my buddys farage to do the body work, painted it gold, wasn't the gold I wanted it was actually from 67 which was Granada gold, mine was originally ash gold bein a 68 which is more of a greenish gold rather than a yellow gold, when I got the car someone had put a twin dome SS hood on it so i left that alone, went out and dumped 1700 in the interior drove down to Altoona, pa and traded a guy the ugly GTO bucket seats that someone put in the car for an original 68 front bench seat and rear seat top and bottom even up, got a set of covers, had them covered, went to swap meets to get some door panels front and rear, and got a new headliner for it and had it put in by my interior guy I go to for all my interior projects, finally to finish the car got all the original rare as hell 300 Deluxe trim to go on the car, and put a set of rally wheels on it 15x7s in the front and corvette deep dish 15x8s in the rear if anyone wants to see pictures I'll post them later, recently Ive had the 327 out for a rebuild, it was all original, stock bore and that had 45,000 original on the motor and when I was drivin in the cam went and it need a rebuild, but originally it ha 10.5:1 compression and I thought I'd bump it up a notch and make it 11:1, I'm having the cast heads done, I might later on buy a set of aluminum for it, but it's gonna have JE domed pistons, almost the biggest hydralic can u can get for a small block I think it's got about 500 to 550 lift it's around there, we updated the heads to handle unleaded gas too, it's gonna be all balanced, I got a holly street domintator intake, and I don't know what carb I'm gonna get I was thing a street demon 750 maybe or use my 750 edelbrock performer carb I currently have, this spring I'm gonna put an m-22 Muncie rockcrusher in it cause I'm sick of tearing up saginaws every year haha, but that's about it, I've had the car since I was 11 and 19 now don't plan on ever gettin rid of her, but tomorrow I'll try to post some pictures of it

At the top you said "I restored", but then you go on to say that other people did your bodywork, your paint, your interior, and your engine...... Just saying......

Your Chevelle sounds nice though, I had a 1972 GMC Sprint SP (if you know what that is), and currently have a 1970 Chevy El Camino SS under the knife! These cars are ridiculously simple compared to modifying newer cars, but I can't leave well enough alone. I have a bit of the old school and new school flava going on with this one! ;)

ya I had someone else do thf body work cause I didn't have a garage to do it in cause it's full of my grandpas farmalls and he wouldn't like taking all 10 out everyday, I didn't know much about doin seats or headliners that's why I had my interior guy Ken to do that, but the rest of the car I did put the new GM fender on the passengers side put the jap fender on the drivers, and hung so new quarter panels and outer wheelwells on it, that sprint sounds awesome, I love elcaminos, but I've always wanted a gmc sprint cause you don't see em all that often, my dad has a 72 elcamino with a factory cowl hood, he recently had it painted white with black racing stripes, he had the interior redone from shi* brown to black carpet and all, had the bed line-x'd that's kinda his daily driver in the summer, he has a 69 ss396 that I get when I'm 30, it has a 396 375h.p (L-78) in it with a 4 speed Muncie M-21 with a 12 bolt 4.10 posi rear, it was 4.88s but he wanted to change it to 4.10s, it's black on black, then he has a 1970 ss454 365h.p with th400 floor shift with factory console has factory a/c bucket seats, white interior, cowl induction hood, the exterior is a real pretty blue almost like a quaser blue with white racing stripes, then recently he bought a 68 ss396 in bad need of restoration that we've been trying to get this guy to sell now for 13 years, it was originally a 396 350 h.p car with a 4 speed we got the original block with the car, and the guy used to drag race it 25 years ago and I can tell cause it's got done massive push rods in it, it's originally Grecian green and I wanna put it back to original but my dad hates green being in the army and all, so he wants to paint it butternut yellow, and I said I wanna go with kind of a Kandy maroon color cause I love maroon, and that's what the 69 used to be, but when we get that car back this spring we got alot of work to do, like taking the yellow shag rug carpet out of it LMAO, but yea I ran the cowl tag and it was originally a bucket seat black interior car and I told my dad I wanna put it back to original with a factory console, and we probably are cause I got2 original 68 buckets in the garage that are out a 68 convertible that someone wrecked bad, and we stripped it and scrapped the car, but yea that's our toys haha

:( that brings up bad memories, a week ago I just had to strip a 68 impala hartop goin to the crusher, it was all original with a 327 275h.p with a th400 with 10 bolt posi rear with the 4 control arms instead of 3 it was a light blue metallic original paint but it sat in the woods for about 27 years
