Make a Indy Auto into a Stick?
What would it take to make a 1990 Indy car with 3.1 into a stick? Appears some did come with a 5 speed?

I'd assume the computer would need tuned for it? wiring harness issues???

You can adapt your harness to work. You need a 5speed ecu. Plus the obvious like trans and axles and shifter and pedals. Very easy swap
Re: Make a Indy Auto into a Stick?
Indeed some Indys did have the Getrag 5-speed, but they were limited. Take a look at this article from v6z24. Though it's meant for J-bodies the procedure is nearly identical to ours. Also, as Barry said, you will need a 5-speed computer as I believe we have an electronic VSS and our Speedo will not work without it and the tuning is slightly different for manual cars.
5-Speed Swap
If you want a computer you can either look in the yards for one OR you can get one made on WOT-Tech.com

You don't need a 5 speed computer, just a chip burnt for it. You can modify your existing wiring harness to work perfect with the 5 speed too.
It's best to find a donor car, an 89-91 v6 5 speed would be ideal for you.
Get the following parts:
Transmission
Flywheel
Both Axles + the jackshaft and bracket
Shift assembly and cables
clutch pedal and hydraulics
clutch pedal safety switch, with as much wiring as you can clip off the donor car - 1 fat yellow, 1 fat purple.
ecm - you really only need the chip - but to get the chip you have to remove the computer anyways.
it might not hurt to grab the trans mount and dogbone - and fill them with polyurethane.

Re: Make a Indy Auto into a Stick?
I'm running a auto harness in my 95 z26 with the stick shifter so anythings possible lol. Pretty much the rule of thumb i go by is to grab anything associated with (ie touching) the 5 speed. I dunno what kinda mount your indy has for the trans/engine on the drivers side but some autos used the same mount that the manuals used.
